Rachel, the little girl I helped the other day, is safe, fine, and happy. I'm so relieved!
I was standing in about the same place I saw her Monday hoping to see her safe and sound, when a car pulled up in front of me. The little girl and her mom hopped out. The mom started crying and said, "Rachel tells me you helped her the other day. Is that right?" I told her it was, and she gave me a great hug and said, "I don't know how to thank you." She may be old, but she is not a bad looking woman. I'll admit, I enjoyed the hug.
She asked for my phone number, so I thought she might have something in mind for how to thank me. For that, I feel like a real dick. She called me later, to thank me again, and she told me that they were having a small birthday dinner for Rachel on Friday, and wanted to know if I could come.
I told her thanks, but I wouldn't be comfortable hanging out with a bunch of kids. She explained that the party with the kids would be Saturday, and Friday was just the adults. So I agreed. Now I just need to figure out a way to ditch my parents on my own birthday (which is also Friday).
I feel like I should bring a gift, but what do you give a little girl?
